Business expense & FBT considerations
Workplace wellness can be a business expense. When an employer funds staff massage, group movement or posture education, the cost may be tax-deductible. Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) can still apply, and eligibility depends on the employer’s circumstances. Please seek advice from your accountant.
This can include on-site remedial massage, group movement and strength sessions, and posture or ergonomics workshops.
Request a workplace wellness quoteMassage arranged as part of running a commercial sporting event may qualify as a business expense where it relates to earning assessable income. Entertainment rules, private use and other deduction conditions can affect the outcome. Income-tax-exempt sporting clubs do not receive the same income-tax deduction benefit against exempt income; their FBT obligations may still apply. Please ask your accountant about your organisation and event.
When an employer funds group movement or strength sessions for staff as part of running the business, the cost may generally be deductible as an employee-benefit expense, depending on the organisation’s circumstances and tax status. Individual employees generally cannot claim fitness classes or gym fees themselves.
Not automatically. Being deductible does not make a benefit FBT-free — employer-funded massage and recurring classes can attract FBT. Some exemptions (such as the minor-benefits rule, which needs a value under $300 and an infrequent, irregular benefit) only apply when every condition is met. FBT is the employer’s responsibility, so please check with your accountant.
Certain work-related health, posture or ergonomic education sessions may qualify for an FBT exemption if all conditions are satisfied. A standard exercise class with limited instruction is not automatically treated this way, and holding a class at your office does not guarantee an exemption. Schools, charities and not-for-profits may have different rules.
